The Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) is a federal assistance program that provides financial support to employed and self-employed Canadians who are directly affected by COVID-19. The program offers $2,000 per month to individuals who are out of work as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The program was introduced by the federal government in late March soon after COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic.
The federal financial aid program was initially anticipated to provide assistance to individuals for a maximum of 16 weeks. Due to the spread of COVID-19 and the resulting economic uncertainty, the federal government recently announced the extension of the program, to those eligible, for 4-week periods starting March 15, 2020 and ending on October 3, 2020.
